Square Mile and the Roaster Phenomenon in Birmingham

Great to hear that James Hoffmann from Square Mile is coming up to Urban Coffee Company on Wednesday to provide training and advice (link)

Square Mile supplies a who’s who of many of London’s best coffee shops including Kaffeine, Prufrock, Dose, Store St, Flat White and Look Mum No Hands to name but a few.

James was World Barista Champion in 1997 and are innovators especially in their single origins and brewed coffee. In 2010, their Penny University pop-up concept shop served an entirely filter coffee menu via syphons, drip filters and glass beakers.

Indeed, last week, I was served two Square Mile single origins at the awesome coffee shop The Barn in Berlin (Kenya -Ngunguru via a Woodneck and Ethiopia Wote via a Syphon),

London-based roasters are recognising Birmingham’s burgeoning independent coffee scene. Having James up from London to comes fresh from the opening of Yorks Bakery Cafe and that fellow London roasters Caravan (based in Exmouth Market and now with their new Kings Cross branch) are supplying beans to Yorks, the first outside London that Caravan are supplying.

With the likes of Extract (supplying Saints), Union (supplying Urban), Has Bean (supplying Six Eight and The Plough) and Caravan supplying Yorks Bakery Cafe, amongst others, Birmingham is becoming a playground for the very best roasters! Exciting times to be in Birmingham.
