Support the Yelp Shops Local Pledge this Christmas

Hi all. It has been a while since I last posted on here but I urge you all to support this initiative to back all things local this Christmas and to do your bit for #indielove.

From the YSL page:
“Yelp’s challenging communities across the land to keep their hard-earned dough close to home by taking the Yelp Shops Local Pledge! What does this mean? Pledging proudly to make a hearty effort to support the great local business community whenever possible, and encouraging others to do the same. Even buying one gift from a local small business makes a big difference in our community.

So click “I’m In!” in the Yelp Shops Local event listing in your city if you plan on making the effort to shop local this holiday season. It’s all about solidarity!”

What’s great is that Yelp Birmingham are completely pushing it and a number of local businesses are already on board. It would be great for both customers and businesses alike to support this campaign keep things local this Christmas.

Visit the campaign on facebook here.

Square Mile and the Roaster Phenomenon in Birmingham

Great to hear that James Hoffmann from Square Mile is coming up to Urban Coffee Company on Wednesday to provide training and advice (link)

Square Mile supplies a who’s who of many of London’s best coffee shops including Kaffeine, Prufrock, Dose, Store St, Flat White and Look Mum No Hands to name but a few.

James was World Barista Champion in 1997 and are innovators especially in their single origins and brewed coffee. In 2010, their Penny University pop-up concept shop served an entirely filter coffee menu via syphons, drip filters and glass beakers.

Indeed, last week, I was served two Square Mile single origins at the awesome coffee shop The Barn in Berlin (Kenya -Ngunguru via a Woodneck and Ethiopia Wote via a Syphon),

London-based roasters are recognising Birmingham’s burgeoning independent coffee scene. Having James up from London to comes fresh from the opening of Yorks Bakery Cafe and that fellow London roasters Caravan (based in Exmouth Market and now with their new Kings Cross branch) are supplying beans to Yorks, the first outside London that Caravan are supplying.

With the likes of Extract (supplying Saints), Union (supplying Urban), Has Bean (supplying Six Eight and The Plough) and Caravan supplying Yorks Bakery Cafe, amongst others, Birmingham is becoming a playground for the very best roasters! Exciting times to be in Birmingham.

The Spirit of Birmingham Walking Tour, September 29th 2012

On Coffee Birmingham day (September 29th 2012), Midlands Discovery Tours in association with Coffee Birmingham will present  The Spirit of Birmingham.

“Join an expert local Blue Badge tourist guide for a very special walking tour of Birmingham.

The tour is a celebration of Birmingham as a city of creativity, innovation and enterprise, from its earliest days to modern times.

As we walk the streets of the modern city centre and Jewellery Quarter, you will discover how Birmingham has always been a place that has welcomed and encouraged original thinking, and hear stories of some of the men and women who took advantage of that spirit.¬† Find out how local people’s ideas shaped the world around them, and how independent Birmingham businesses became household names.

But as tour guide Ian Braisby will introduce, it’s not just about the past – we will also explore modern Birmingham’s thriving independent scene and some of the key locations and areas where it can be found.

Covering everything from music, art and literature to industry and, of course, food and drink, this very special tour is an entertaining and informative look at a city that has always lived up to its motto “Forward”.

These events are very popular and offered on a first-come first-served basis so book your place early.

Times and booking details coming soon, but for more information, please contact Midlands Discovery Tours by calling Ian Braisby on:
