As part of all the fun stuff going on as part of Coffee Birmingham Day,  we are delighted to announce that Blueprint will be providing live music for Coffee Birmingham Day at Urban Coffee’s JQ Emporium from 2pm.

Blueprint are a four piece instrumental group who also work collaboratively with singers and other instrumentalists.

With stylistic diversity, their music generally falls somewhere between smooth jazz, funk edged jazz and R & B.

The group’s compositions derive from reminiscent or familar sounds from their likes and past experiences.

How much is that doggy … in a coffee cup?!

Taken from last weekend’s Sunday Times, say hello to the world’s smallest dog conveniently fitting into this Coffee cup like a gorgeous espresso. Okay, perhaps taking the coffee analogies too far.

Vodcast: Coffee Birmingham meets Urban Coffee Company

In the build up to September 29th, we will be doing a series of videos to celebrate Birmingham’s independent scene. First up, the guys at Urban Coffee Company invited me over to film. Armed with the power cameras on my tab and my phone, I made the best use of the footage I had to put this together.

Please excuse my meagre creative skills. I am not a filmmaker. In fact, I used Windows Live Movie Maker to do this.

What I want to do though these films is to capture an appreciation for indies across the city. Thanks to Peter for using his drama school training to good effect (!) and to the team of Urbanistas who were happy to commit their talents to film.

To those whose faces appear in the videos, please let me know so we can credit you as an #indielove person. It would be good to know who your name beyond being Urban customers.

More to come next week.

Birmingham’s indies come to the rescue ….

Last week, we had a situation where we found ourselves with an urgent requirement after a print supplier we had been talking to for a few weeks could not work with us on this project.

Between a few of us, we tweeted out our urgent need, and within an hour, between 10 and 15 recommendations arrived.

In need of a short term fix. we were lucky to have such an on the ball and responsive twitter base, especially from Brum’s indies. Thanks especially to Gary from the fabulous Anderson and Hill who recommended us to approach to Set and Match. There were a few excellent recommendations but Set and Match went above and beyond our expectation by becoming our print sponsor.

It goes to show how tight-knit and supportive Birmingham’s independent community is and we are extremely grateful to Gary for his recommendation and to Phil and the team at Set and Match for being so brilliant and professional.

Announcing Damian Brown Photography as a supporter of Coffee Birmingham

We are delighted to announce that Coffee Birmingham will be working with Damian Brown, a Birmingham based professional portrait photographer to showcase some of his brilliant photography work.

In his own words, Damien “shoots relaxed portraits and captures natural images” and we are delighted to be putting on an upcoming exhibition of his work which highlights some of the best of what Birmingham has to offer in independent culture.

… And as Damian is a fan of independent coffee shops, we will be exhibiting his work in an indie too.

More to come on the exhibition imminently.

Pictures and Report from #Superjelly

Last Friday’s #superjelly was a super-sized version of the official Birmingham #jelly usually held monthly at Urban Coffee Company’s Jewellery Quarter Coffee Emporium.

Coffee Birmingham teamed up with official Birmingham #jelly organiser Rickie Josen and our sponsors, Enterprise Nation to run the #superjelly at three venues across the city – Urban Coffee Company in the Jewellery Quarter (as per usual) but also Six Eight Kafe in the city centre and Cafe Ezra at Hotel LaTour in Eastside.

It was a fantastic day with existing jellyheads turning up on mass to co-work, drink coffee, chat and talk not only with other well known jellyheads but also to welcome and introduce new jellyheads. We were delighted to see a lot of new faces to #jelly. Our new jellyheads included a Jelly organiser from Shopshire, leading voice actor, two hairdressers, an Occupational Psychologist and a Birmingham based printing company.

What is always refreshing to see is how new jellyheads very quickly atune to the opportunities that Jelly provides, whether it is to chat, to exchange views or two get some advice. For example, we introduced hairdressers @Scott1One and @dkny_n to twitter and to Enterprise Nation’s #watercoolermoment.

The twittersphere was definitely full of activity relating to #superjelly and quite a few people went on a #jellycrawl to all three venues on the day.

All the coffee shop locations responded by putting on their own deals exclusively for #jellyheads and there was lots of glorious cake and a few savouries courtesy of our supporter, the awesome @cocomelibakery.

We are very grateful to Enterprise Nation for sponsoring us and this event and to @cybrum, @rickiewrites and @tickitoff for being our #jelly guides.

Square Mile and the Roaster Phenomenon in Birmingham

Great to hear that James Hoffmann from Square Mile is coming up to Urban Coffee Company on Wednesday to provide training and advice (link)

Square Mile supplies a who’s who of many of London’s best coffee shops including Kaffeine, Prufrock, Dose, Store St, Flat White and Look Mum No Hands to name but a few.

James was World Barista Champion in 1997 and are innovators especially in their single origins and brewed coffee. In 2010, their Penny University pop-up concept shop served an entirely filter coffee menu via syphons, drip filters and glass beakers.

Indeed, last week, I was served two Square Mile single origins at the awesome coffee shop The Barn in Berlin (Kenya -Ngunguru via a Woodneck and Ethiopia Wote via a Syphon),

London-based roasters are recognising Birmingham’s burgeoning independent coffee scene. Having James up from London to comes fresh from the opening of Yorks Bakery Cafe and that fellow London roasters Caravan (based in Exmouth Market and now with their new Kings Cross branch) are supplying beans to Yorks, the first outside London that Caravan are supplying.

With the likes of Extract (supplying Saints), Union (supplying Urban), Has Bean (supplying Six Eight and The Plough) and Caravan supplying Yorks Bakery Cafe, amongst others, Birmingham is becoming a playground for the very best roasters! Exciting times to be in Birmingham.
